There is close to 0 reason to use this weapon in PvE or PvP as opposed to Moonveil, except maybe for Fashion. Unfortunately, this seems to be the worst iteration of the Moonlight Greatsword in any souls game, and seems to be outclassed in every single possible way by Moonveil. There's so many ways of fighting a boss with it that it doesn't get tiring.

And isn't having "lots of options" one of the fun elements of Elden Ring? IMO, while some "stronger" builds out there can kill anything in few seconds merely by smashing 2-3 buttons (dodge + jump attack spam), the way how a Darkmoon + shield gives me the options to parry / block / guard-counter / do critical hits / deal physical damage / deal magical damage / deal melee damage / deal ranged damaged / cause debuffs makes the game a lot more fun to me. While it's no ace or joker, it's still a good card nonetheless. TLDR It puts another card (cool beam) in your deck. That said, since the weapon art is a buff with a decent duration, I feel that it's supposed to play a complementary role rather than being the main actor. But if the other elements of the battle don't (and pretty often won't) allow that to shine, then it obviously won't work well. It lets you shoot beams, and the beams both looks cool and hits hard, so of course you'd want to focus on doing that. My impression is that the weapon can be deceiving. Personally, I think the most important detail about Darkmoon is that, rather than. All the while being in the low-end of the level recommendation for the areas (for example, I fought Malenia at level 106 took me 3 hours to defeat her, and it was only later that I learned that the level recommended for the area was 120~150). After I obtained it, I defeated all bosses without using spirit ashes or cooperators, and cleared the game for the first time with 112 hours total. And no, I never touched the PVP function (nor do I plan to), so I can't cover that. Using it feels so "complete" to me that all other builds end up feeling somewhat lacking. I haven't played any other souls games before, so I can't really compare it to the ones from the previous games, but this sword worked greatly for me. Just don't forget to slap a 'Godfrey Icon' and 'Shard of Alexander' on top of that. If not that, at least remove the sword raise animation on normal R2 attacks, it just makes it unnecessarily slow. When the buff is active, it makes sense you raise the sword up before shooting the beam to get some power or whatever, but why does it have the same animation on it's default form? They could've made it so the normal R2 would have a vertical/thrust attack and with the buff it'd change to horizontal beams, the same way 'War Cry' works. Only thing I don't like about the weapon is the R2 attack being the same with and without the buff. And they nailed the design too, it looks COLD. Ever since DS3 introduced frost as a status, I've thought of that. I love the frost addition to the sword, it only makes sense a weapon that gets it's power from the moon itself would freeze where it touches. It was always considered a good weapon for high intelligence characters and it looked cool, but I've never liked those versions THIS much. I haven't tried the Bloodborne one but got to PvP with it in all three Dark Souls games. Moveset & Videos in Elden Ring for Dark Moon Greatsword The most important detail about Darkmoon is that the weapon art is a buff that lets you fire beams.
